Eastern Illinois University Joins Institute of International Education Coalition to Double Number of Students Who Study Abroad by End of Decade: 400 students per year by 2019 
Charleston, September 17—EIU has pledged to join the Institute of International Education (IIE)’s Generation Study Abroad initiative to double the number of American students who study abroad by the end of the decade. The initiative is also focusing on increasing the diversity of the students who study abroad, ensuring quality, and removing barriers to participation. EIU has committed to increasing the number of students who study abroad to 400 per year over the next five years.

Lessons from Abroad Study Abroad Returnee Conference
Both students and staff will attend the Lessons From Abroad conference in Chicago to learn about marketing study abroad experiences in a professional context and other options for going abroad again, such as volunteering or graduate school abroad. A handful of EIU faculty and staff are also presenting in panels and sessions during the event.

Study Abroad Fair Fall 2013
University Offices, the William V. Weber Program in Study Abroad Staff, and past study abroad participants and faculty will be in attendance for the annual Study Abroad Fair to encourage EIU students to study abroad and provide them with more information for best options for going abroad.

Yarbrough Receives Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
EIU senior and Chicago native Andrea Yarbrough has been awarded the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for her study abroad program in South Africa this summer.

Students Wins Competitive DAAD Scholarship for Study in Germany
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the German national agency for the support of international academic cooperation. This summer, EIU student and native of Orland Hills, Emily Pedziwiatr will return to Germany thanks to the DAAD University Summer Course Grant.

At the annual International Awards Dinner, the offices of International Students and Scholars and the William V. Weber Program in Study Abroad at Eastern Illinois University recognized outstanding students and faculty for their achievements and contributions to international education.

The EIU William V. Weber Program in Study Abroad will celebrate International Education Week 2012 with several events on campus, including a scholarship essay workshop and an award-winning Indian film.

Returning Study Abroad Student Finds Passion
Students returning home from study abroad programs often arrive a changed pupil. The world has been unveiled; culture, perspective, tastes and more have been realized. As for senior Kaj Holm, he returned home from the Bahamas with a newly recognized passion, determined to vitalize underprivileged classrooms on Andros Island.

Study Abroad Leads to Life Abroad
Students studying abroad often approach their last weeks out of the country through a bittersweet lens. Friends and family have been missed, but flying away from a newly formed second home isn’t easy. Former student, Erin Mahoney, experienced such trepidations. Her solution: Move “home” to Australia.

COST (Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching)
Students within the Eastern Illinois University Department of Education are enthusiastic to student teach, and may be going abroad to do so. The Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching (COST) offers students the opportunity to complete their student teaching requirement in exciting overseas destinations.

Endowed scholarship expanded to include European destinations
In 2004, Gene Strandberg, Professor Emeritus of the School of Technology, established the Kate and Cliff Strandberg Study Abroad in Sweden Scholarship. This award recognized full-time students in good academic standing who planned to study abroad at Växjö University in Sweden.As of January 2012, the scholarship has been extended to include students who choose to study abroad in Europe.
