Program Description:
Barcelona
CIEE Architecture and Design Program in Barcelona, Spain

With jaw-dropping architecture that ranges from Gaudi’s unfinished Sangra Família to the avant garde Torre Agbar to the Golden Fish sculpture designed for the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona is dream city for people who love design. Regardless of your Spanish skills, you can see these spectacular structures up close, and learn about the culture and history behind them – and even intern with a leading architectural firm. There’s more – you’ll also travel beyond Barcelona to see more significant examples of design (and culture!) throughout the region.

Study abroad in Barcelona, and you'll:

  • Get a leg up on your professional career with experience at a prominent architectural or design firm.
  • Learn from experienced instructors who are highly respected in their field.
  • Take day trips to explore beautiful Catalonia, plus a weekend excursion to Bilbao, Madrid, or Seville – see how it’s different from – and the same as – Madrid.

Launched in 2007, this dynamic program accommodates students at many levels of Spanish language skills and a variety of visual arts majors. Students select one of three tracks: Architecture, ELISAVA Direct Enrollment Design, and ELISAVA Study Abroad Design (a design program with design courses taught in English).

Classes are held at three locations:

Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura. ESARO is the School of Architecture of the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya. A small, private school, ESARQ focuses on providing architects with international training, combined with knowledge of the most innovative technology, and with an emphasis on individual attention and private tutorials.

ELISAVA School of Design. The leading Barcelona design school, associated with the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and independently run, was founded in 1961 by architects, designers, and theoreticians who wanted to teach with a cross-disciplinary approach. It hosts 1,500 students who are taught by 500 teachers and collaborators.

CIEE Study Center, Barcelona. Housed in adjoining historic buildings near the city’s main square. Language courses are taught by experienced professors who specialize in teaching Spanish as a second language. Other CIEE courses are taught by local university faculty or members of local institutions of higher education and/or research.
