FAQ on Scholarships for Studying Abroad

Where can I find study abroad scholarships for 2019?

All scholarships are now available on Ask around and search online to find scholarships outside of EIU that you may qualify for!

Do I need to have a certain GPA to qualify for Office of Study Abroad scholarships?

Yes, you must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Keep in mind that many departments and scholarship programs have different requirements.

What can Office of Study Abroad grants cover?

If a student is awarded a scholarship, they can receive up to $2,000. It will not usually pay for the entire cost of the trip, but can be applied toward the trip in any way the student wishes.

When are scholarship applications due for study abroad?

For scholarships within our office, the due dates are as follows:
October 4, 2019:  Spring semester 2020
December 6, 2019:  Spring break 2020
February 1, 2020: Independent summer & Fall semester 2020

Who do I ask for scholarship recommendations?

Faculty, staff, or supervisors are most common. You may not ask a family member or the faculty leader of your program. A good letter will speak about your work ethic, your character, and your plans to go abroad. Prepare your chosen reference by providing a copy of your resume & some details on your study abroad program.

What can I do to strengthen my study abroad scholarship application?

Give yourself plenty of time to write your essay and ask for recommendations. Make sure you read the application and meet all of the qualifications. Explain why you are studying abroad, and the impact it will have (including life after graduation, personal development, and future career). Be sure to answer all questions thoroughly and have somebody read over any essays to proofread them.

What does it mean to be a study abroad ambassador?

Study abroad ambassadors are the recipients of a grant from our office with the terms to complete four service hours upon their return. This can be through submitting photos, volunteering at our study abroad fairs, speaking at a presentation, writing a feature for social media, and many more activities!
