Program Description:
Petition for Program Approval

If a student at Eastern Illinois finds an international education program that is not an already EIU approved program, but it meets a need that an approved program at Eastern does not, there is a multi-step process outlined below to request getting the proposed program approved. Students are highly encouraged to enroll in EIU’s existing study abroad programs, and only when it is deemed that no existing program would accommodate a student can a student petition a new one.
It is strongly advised that students start the process for program approval one year prior to expected participation. All supporting materials for program approval need to be submitted through the OSA's online portal one month prior to semester deadline. Applicants should expect a petition decision 2 weeks prior to application deadline.

You will receive a direct email from the Office of Study Abroad when the committee reaches a decision about your petition. Please use your EIU account to check for official communication.

You will be asked to complete several requirements including, but not limited to:

1) Petition Program Questionnaire
2) Host Institution Agreement for Non-Partner Program
3) Financial Aid Consortium Agreement
4) Course Approval Form signed by the academic advisor and department chair
5) Official transcripts
6) Photocopy of your passport

Petition will not be granted for programs that do not meet the following criteria, including, not limited to:
  • Must be accredited by a recognized regional or national accrediting agency in the United States or recognized by the Ministry of Education of the country in which it operates.
  • Cannot be operated by a for-profit entity; no organizations can be considered.
  • Must offer a minimum of 15 credits per semester for fall, spring or academic year programs.
  • Cannot operate in a country for which the U.S. State Department has issued a Travel Advisory above Level 2, unless an Exemption request for Travel has also been filed and approved in conjunction with the Petition for Program Approval by the deadline.
